I myself was cyberbullied when I was in Middle School. The primary danger is that you cannot escape it. Unlike traditional bullying that ends at the end of the school day cyberbullying is “persistent” as online devices allow you to “continuously communicate 24 hours a day”. (ASPA) Below are the tips I would give to a child that is going through similar cyberbullying as I did from what I learned during my personal experience.Ideas to prevent online harassment:The main thing is that children need to speak up. “More than 2/3 of those harassed online said they knew their harasser in real life.” (Newmark, 2017) This means that kids can be speaking to an adult and the harassment can actually be put to an end. The more that people speak out about their cyberbullying the more likely these bullies can be regulated.Secondly, especially children need to be careful about the websites and social media they are using. These can be great tools, but they should know what is being kept private to just their private followers and what is being published to everyone.Lastly, I believe that children need to be educated on the topic and given an action plan on what to do if this happens to them. I was well versed in how to stop bullying in person but was never taught what to do if it happened online.Tips on how to respond to online harassment:The most important thing to do is to “save everything.” (WHO@) When I was first being bullied, I felt as if I deleted it and that it would be gone, but this was not the case. It was important to have evidence when I decided to seek help from an adult. The second point is to not respond with hate and lower yourself to the same level as your harasser. It is a common reflex to respond to them with the same aggression that you had received but it is not worth it in the long run.Lastly, make sure to report their accounts, so that not only do they receive consequences from their parents/ teachers, but they might also be suspended by the social media itself. Reporting their account could keep others safe online as well. Arts & Humanities Writing COM 2080 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
