Essay Prompt for Purchasing Power Parity
What is a Big Mac? It is a burger with two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese,
pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun [1]. They were first sold at their store on McKnight
Road in Pittsburgh in the late 1960s1, and as they were a big hit, they were added to the menu
world-wide. In the world of economics, there is a concept called Purchasing Power Parity,
which is defined as:
Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a measurement of prices in different countries
that uses the prices of specific goods to compare the absolute purchasing
power of the countries’ currencies. [2]
Since the components of a Big Mac are known in such detail, it became an easy example for
economic teachers to use for PPP [3]. It turned out that the Big Mac Index is a great
measurement tool as the cost of transportation, real estate, and utilities are also included. The
newspaper, The Economist, regularly reports this index for the worlds economy [4].

That was the store closest to my neighborhood when I was a kid. BTW this is an example of how and when to
use a footnote!
