Question Answered step-by-step 1. Census data show that the traditional nuclear family is in… 1. Census data show that the traditional nuclear family is in decline as a primary family structure. Describe the changes over the last 30 years and identify what family structures have been growing.A nuclear family is the stereotype of a family consisting of a father, mother, and child (Butler, 2017). However, over the years variations of the nuclear family have been on a rise. One of the variations is single parents. A single parent can be a single biological parent, extended family, or foster parent raising a child. In 2020 18,580 were considered single parent, compared to 8,200 in 1970 (US Census Bureau, 2021). One reason there is a rise in single-parent families can be due to the reduced stigma associated with divorce (Harkness et al., 2020). Another variation of a family is cohabitation. Generally, cohabitation refers to a couple living together, but not legally married. The rise in cohabitation can be due to the decrease in the negative stigma of getting married (Rio Salado, 2022). Moreover, the rise in LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) becoming more acceptable, adds another variation to what is considered a family. People are becoming more independent, possibly focusing more on their careers or have yet to find their significant other. All these variations are the reason why there is a decline in what is considered a nuclear family.2. Explain some ways that you see religion having social control in the everyday world. One way that religion can have social control on people’s lives daily, can be a sense of morality. Though many religions have different beliefs, many have a sense of how they should behave/ act in order to be accepted by their religion’s God or to be accepted in their afterlife. People will act a certain way in society they believe is acceptable based on their religion. The majority of religions have basic rules that should be followed that align with laws such as no homicide of others. However, all have a different perspective on what is considered right or wrong based on religious standpoints. Judaism for example forbids the consumption of pork, as they believe it leads to gluttony, while Christianity allows ingestion of pork. In addition, religion has social control over people’s lives by deciding how to dress or preferred sexual behaviors. People that believe in Buddhism are required to wear robes in their lives, while Christians such as Catholics do not have a dress code requirement to attend church, or to perform a daily activity. The majority of people’s lives are influenced by religious social control from how to act to how people dress.3. What was the intended goal for free access to schools? Do you think it has achieved its intended goal? Explain. The intended goal for free access to school is the equal opportunity for students to receive education, regardless of race, religion, or social class (Rio Salado, 2022). In the United States, free access to schooling is public schools mainly funded by local property taxes. Though I do believe that it has reached its intended goal to an extent, it does not provide equal opportunity for students based on funding. For example, students that are in lower social classes will have fewer resources than students in a higher social class. From experiencing this firsthand I believe this to be the case. When in secondary schooling, one school had limited computers per classroom, while the other school had computers for every student. Additionally, those with special needs may not receive equal education as other students. Based on Mills v Board of Education of District of Columbia, the board believed that educating special needs students would more costly than other students. Though it was found that they can receive public or private funded education, those with a higher social class can afford better education more suited to their child’s special needs.4. Define authority figures. Why do people accept traditional authority figures even though these types of leaders have limited means of enforcing their power?Authority figures are people who display the power that others believe is legitimate and are willing to follow their orders. There are three types of authority figures, traditional, charismatic, and legal-rational authority. Typically, people embrace traditional authoritarian leaders because they have been established some time ago. Moreover, people still respect them due to having authority previously. Though traditional authority figures have limited power, mutual respect from others allows them to be authoritarian figures. Queen Elizabeth would be considered a traditional figure as she had inherited rules of succession (Rio Salado, 2022). A charismatic authority figure is when people obey their demands because followers believe in their character as the leader, with belief that they can transcend existing authority or practices (Abercrombie et al., 2006). Charismatic figures usually emerge in crisis and hold power for a short amount of time (Rio Salado, 2022). An example of a charismatic figure would be Adolf Hitler, when Germany was facing an economic crisis he made the people of Germany believe he could help them. Lastly, rational-legal authority is the power that is written such as laws. This type of authority is compliance with formal rules established by regular, public procedures (Abercrombie et al., 2006). An example of this authority can be rules placed in a workplace, such as an employee handbook. Rational legal authority lacks the human element of enforcing control.
