This assignment requires you to explore a real-world application of
economics. Your answer must be no longer than 700 words in length and
many essays that receive a perfect score will be under this word limit.
Assignments must be submitted electronically via Turnitin on Canvas. Please
note that you can only upload your file as one of the three file types:
doc, docx or pdf. Should submission problems occur, students should
contact the unit coordinator as soon as possible.
Remember: we are assessing how well you can apply what you have
learned in this unit of study to the questions. The correct answers will be
based on what you have learned in BUSS140 so far.
ESSAY QUESTIONS
You have been hired as a consultant for the Australian Competition and
Consumer Commission (ACCC, https://www.accc.gov.au/). You are working
in the division that is responsible for regulation of the airline industry. Your
manager has been informed that Qantas (Q) and Japan Airlines (JA) are
planning to apply for an authorization of a joint business agreement to fully
coordinate their air passenger and cargo operations between Australia and
Japan. Your manager asks you to prepare a report that answers questions 15 below.
IMPORTANT: You must back up statements that you make with logical
reasoning and supporting evidence where possible. You need to clearly
explain your reasoning.
1. For simplicity, assume that there are only two airline companies
that fly between Australia and Japan, Q and JA. Initially assume
that both firms are identical in terms of their production costs. If the
two firms can cooperate, what should they do to maximise industry
profits? [4 points]
2. How does your answer to (1) change if the two firms have different
costs of production? [2 points]
3. As an ACCC consultant, how would you view the proposed
cooperation between the Q and JA? [3 points]
4. Now assume that each airline is free to set weekly number of flights
between two countries, but each firm can communicate (via the
business press) what they plan to do first. Using an economic
model, show that it might be difficult to sustain a cooperative (high
profit) outcome. (Hint: what firms communicate may not be
credible.) [3 points]
5. This question requires you to think more broadly than the airline
industry, given that in Australia, firms are not allowed to explicitly
coordinate their prices. Are there other ways in which two large
firms can try to avoid being caught in a competitive outcome?
Briefly, discuss the relevance of these alternative strategies to
airline industry. [3 points]
Frequently asked questions and answers
1. How is my essay marked?
The essay is worth a total of 15 marks.
15 marks are assigned based on the responses to essay questions.
For each part of the question, up to 1 mark is deducted for readability
and general writing proficiency
-1 mark if very difficult to read. Poor sentence structure, poor
spelling/grammar, etc.
-0.5 marks if readable but several spelling/grammatical errors.
No mark deduction will be made if the question reads well with very
few spelling/grammatical errors.
2. If I want to add graphs, how do I include the drawings in my
answers?
You are welcome to take pictures of your hand-drawn diagrams and insert
them into the essay. You can also draw them in PowerPoint or Word. Any
diagrams or graphs must be legible and clearly labelled.
3. Should I write an essay like in an English class essay or provide a
point-by-point response?
Please provide a point-by-point response in the format below:
1) BUSS1040 was the best class this term because I like having my tutorials
on Tuesdays.
2) I think the government should impose a price ceiling on the university fees
because studying at university is too expensive.
The answer to each question must be written under the relevant point. For
example, you will lose marks if you provide a part of the answer to question
1 under 2 or elsewhere.
4. Do I need to include references?
It is not necessary to include references but if you are making a claim that
cannot be easily verified in the textbooks, you will need to provide a reference
to the original source of the idea or material. You can use Chicago referencing
style or any other commonly used referencing style. The list of references
should be provided at the end of your essay and does not count towards the
word limit. In-text references do count towards your word limit.
5. Can I use Ed to discuss the essay?
Answers to essay questions cannot be posted on Ed. If you have any
technical or clarification questions that do not give away the answer, please
post them on Ed with a meaningful title. You cannot discuss your answers
with tutors.
6. What if I am sick and cannot complete the essay?
In the unlikely event that you experience a misadventure or severe illness that
renders you unable to complete the essay, please apply for special
consideration. There is no need to send an additional email to the coordinator
about your circumstances. If special consideration is granted, your
assessment components will be reweighted (your final will be worth more) as
you will not be allowed to write another essay.
7. Can I discuss my essay answers with my tutor?
No :). This would be unfair to others. Tutors are instructed not to discuss
essay answers with students.
8 Can I email Prof. Atalay to double-check if the answers to the above
questions are for sure correct?
No (see #7)
9. Do I pick one question from the list or do I answer them all?
You should answer all of the questions.
10. What happens if my essay is under the word limit?
The word limit is the upper bound. You can receive a perfect score even if
your essay is under the word limit. The key thing is you need to clearly
articulate your reasoning.
11. What if submit my assignments late?
The due date for this assignment is 29/10/2021 17:00.
