However, here are some things that we expect
your final report to include:
1. Title page, including:
o title of OP (full citation),
o SID,
o year & semester
o word count.
2. Abstract (max 200 words)
3. Introduction
4. Data: describe the relevant data in clear and
unambiguous terms, including a discussion of
o the OP’s data, and
o your replication data
o Note: We expect you to include (and
discuss) a summary statistics table,
reporting the min, max, mean, and
standard deviation of your key dependent
variables and your key explanatory
variables
5. Empirical strategy: explain clearly how you
conducted your replication and extension.
Just as you followed the OP in your
replication, others should be able to use your
description to replicate your approach
6. Results: as this is the final report, you should
focus on the results of your extension.
o Clearly label tables and figures, adding
appropriate notes to make it clear what
variables are included and how they are

6. Results: as this is the final report, you should
focus on the results of your extension.
o Clearly label tables and figures, adding
appropriate notes to make it clear what
variables are included and how they are
constructed
o If relevant for your conclusions, you can
report OP’s results (for example, as one or
two columns in a table). We leave it up to
you to decide if your conclusions require a
comparison with OP’s results
o Note: IF your conclusions focus on
comparing your results and the OP’s, then
these key results must be in the body of
your paper, not relegated to an appendix
7. Discussion: relate your results back to your
research question and the literature that your
work fits into (this section can be subsumed in
the Results section if you think it flows
better). Some potential discussion points:
o Interpret the results and provide economic
intuition of your findings
o Compare and contrast your findings with
those of OP
o Discuss how your findings compare with
those from the broader literature
8. Conclusion: this is where you summarize the
key findings of your extension, recognize the
limitations of your work, discuss potential
future research directions, and (if relevant)

those of OP
o Discuss how your findings compare with
those from the broader literature
8. Conclusion: this is where you summarize the
key findings of your extension, recognize the
limitations of your work, discuss potential
future research directions, and (if relevant)
discuss at least one policy recommendation
based on your work.
2) Word count &
formatting
Nothing unusual on formatting:
12-point font
Standard margins
Note: if you wrote your paper in Word, you
must upload your .doc or .docx file (not a pdf
version).
If you use LaTeX, no worries—a pdf is fine

What about math and
equations?
The word equivalent for displayed math and
other equations is 16 words per row for
single-column equations. Two-column
equations count as 32 words per row
3) References
You MUST include a reference list, with a mix of
“forward” and “backward” citations
o Remember: any source that you cite in the
main text must be included in your references
o Conversely, do not include sources in your
reference list if you have not cited them in the
main text!
o Use author-date, Harvard style references
o Pay attention to the quality of the papers that
you cite (please refer to our Canvas resources
if you are unsure about how to evaluate this)

accordingly.
5) Code
You must include the data and the code required
to reproduce your paper.
DO NOT simply include ALL the OP’s
replication data
DO NOT include code to run regressions or
produce figures that are not in your final
paper
DO set file paths at the top of the file, to
make it easy for your assessor to run the file
without having to change file paths every
time you generate an output
DO include the code necessary to produce
the tables and figures that you include in your
paper (e.g. esttab / outreg / putexcel
commands and/or graph export commands
for figures)
If your dataset is large, you may include a link
to OneDrive or Dropbox in your README file.
