which ‘node’ in the chain drove its expansion? i.e. was production or consumption the dominant force? and 2) how were producing regions changed as a result of demand? Were changes most dramatic in producing or consuming regions?

Write a 3-5 page, double spaced essay that answers the following question. Adhere to the formatting specifications below.

QUESTION: To date, we have explored some dimensions of the commodity chains for silver, sugar, cochineal, indigo, tobacco, cacao and coffee. Using at least ONE but not more than TWO of these commodities, describe the commodity chain and make an argument about 1) which ‘node’ in the chain drove its expansion? i.e. was production or consumption the dominant force? and 2) how were producing regions changed as a result of demand? Were changes most dramatic in producing or consuming regions?

[EXAMPLES: One way to approach this is to frame a question along the following lines: “How did global demand for cochineal affect indigenous societies in Oaxaca, MX?”]

Make sure to provide specific examples from lectures and readings to support your claims. Do not use quotations – everything should be in your own words. However, paraphrasing and direct references to readings should be cited – you may use in-text parenthetical citations for this exam, e.g. (Mintz, 75). You may NOT use material obtained via the Internet.

FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS: Essay must be 3-5 pages in length, double spaced, one-sided, in a standard 12-point font with standard one-inch margins, PAGE NUMBERS ON EVERY PAGE and your name only – no extraneous information – on the first page.
