The first thing I would like to address would be the role of the individual in discovering and uncovering their personal biases against certain age groups or cultures. People need to understand their own beliefs and hesitations regarding other people to make any progress in diminishing the effect of discrimination in the workplace. In nursing especially, many nurses have experienced the feeling that older, more experienced nurses are impatient, frustrated, and unkind because they lack experience and knowledge that has taken a lifetime to develop (Shelley, 2018). Another essential topic to address would be having everyone determine whether they are willing to learn and respect other cultures. People who are eager to be open, tolerant, and understand that they do not have to change themselves to accept others are more likely to be happier in their workplace (Benzo et al., 2017). To implement communication in the workplace, I would facilitate the team-building strategy of open communication. I would support individuals in their desire to ask questions and offer differing opinions. This can be achieved by setting aside specific time for individuals to meet with their leaders and understanding that they can talk about any issue they or the patients are facing. Inclusiveness can be facilitated by providing teaching opportunities for staff members to explain more about their culture to the team or have different generations teach others their favorite “tricks” for getting things done. Trust can be increased by helping all staff members and patients know that they are in a safe place where they are essential, and their concerns will be heard. Creating a place where staff members and patients do not fear retribution for having a different opinion or asking clarifying questions will allow providers to have greater job satisfaction and patients to have adequate care. Lastly, successful conflict resolution can be facilitated by implementing all the above team strategies, which will allow people who come into the workplace to know they are in a safe place where it is ok to have different opinions as well as the humility to accept another’s view if that is the correct path to take. This can be supported by resolution simulations or even debrief opportunities in a controlled environment where there is a feeling of mutual respect.
