Peer reviewThe nursing route associated with hospital-based training and not with a college or university does not eliminate nursing from being a profession. Instead, it could be considered a transformation from occupation to profession (Biaso et al., 2004). Nurses with a diploma are still able to practice in clinics and skilled nursing facilities. They do not make as much money as a nurse with a BSN would, but it is still acceptable. Also, education is paving the way to specializing and gaining research opportunities. So, theoretically, a nurse can have the clinical experience, but will still need the proper education to merge everything together in their respected fields.   Nurses are teachers, advocators, students and researchers, all of which are basic nursing roles. Those nurses who received hospital-based training are just as capable as nurses from a college or university on taking on these complex roles. One main reason nurses go towards a diploma program is because they aren't economically stable to go to nursing school. With this, they can always go back and further their education, whether it be an associate's degree or bachelor's degree, or even as far as a masters or doctorates. It is definitely recommended for nursing to shift towards academic education (Biaso et al., 2004), however, practicing under a diploma is just as successful as having training from a university or college.
