Research assignment. This will allow students to engage with the scholarship on specific
frameworks in the global economy based on the real-world data and theories of development.
The student is to complete a tutorial assignment of 1500 – 2000 words in length. The assignment is
to be orally presented at the real time tutorial (via zoom). The allocation of presentation weeks will
be decided in the week 2 tutorial. 10% will be allocated for the presentation. The written assignment
(30%) is to be submitted through Assessments folder by 11.55 pm on the day of the week following
the presentation. Assignments submitted after 11.55 pm will be penalised. Students are reminded to
keep a copy of all work submitted for assessment.
Important students can choose topic other than outlined below, but the topic needs to be approved
by the lecturer.
Assignment questions:
Week 5: Distinguish between growth and development. What are the main measures of economic
development? Which do you consider the best? Justify your answer.
Week 6: What are the main theories of development? Are they compatible? Which do you consider
are the most relevant today? Justify your answer.
Week 7: Is rapid population growth threatening the economic progress of developing nations? How
can improvements in the role and status of women aid development?
Week 8: Do most Third World education systems promote development? How important are
education and health facilities in the development process? What else could be done to improve
education and health in these countries?
Week 9: What place does aid and trade play in a nation’s development? With reference to specific
examples, what problems may occur as a result of policies that promote trade and aid?
Week 10: What role do the IMF and World Bank play in promoting development? Evaluate the
effects of their policies in at least two countries.
Week 11: Compare the paths to development of any two of the following countries with specific
reference to the role of the government – Japan, Taiwan, South Korea.

Purpose:
Will be based on the analysis of particular
country/region/development issue.
Foster students to obtain superior research skills on locating and
using primary and secondary international trade or finance
related economic data and sources
Encourage students to obtain critical thinking skills through
analysing economic data
Teach students to communicate clearly in written form to
construct an evidence-based economic case with appropriate
referencing.
This also requires presenting their work in front of audience using
various media.
