Cultural competence can drastically impact quality of care and it's vital for healthcare workers to understand different cultures and how they view and interpret medicinal practices. Different cultures can have different parameters for care, based on patient wishes. Whether these are religious or ethnic differences (or both), it's important to understand a patient's viewpoint and honor that. For example, a 65-year-old patient who identified as a Christian Scientist. Although Christian Scientists don't typically take a physical approach to healthcare, they are, under some circumstances, allowed to see physicians (Galanti, 2008). This patient saw a GI specialist with complaints of GI and BM pain. While the physician found a rectal tumor and recommended surgery, the patient refused, citing their religious beliefs. The surgery, a resectioning, would have cured the patient of colon cancer. But, over a period of six years, the tumor grew, and the patient eventually succumbed to her condition. In this scenario, the physician didn't necessarily agree with the patient's beliefs. In fact, had the patient chosen to have surgery, they would have lived a much longer life. However, acting with cultural competence, the physician respected the patient's beliefs and did their best to make the patient as comfortable as possible under the limitations the patient had set. While the outcome could have been better, the quality of care from the patient perspective was as good as it could be. Situations like this can show patients that their religious and cultural beliefs will be respected if they seek care.  Side note, the book "Caring for Patients from Different Cultures" by Geri-Ann Galanti is a great book that talks about a slew of socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and religious factors that can impact the patient experience in healthcare. It's one of the few books I kept from my undergrad studies and I highly recommend it for anyone who may need to treat or interact with patients in a culturally diverse setting.READ THE ABOVE.
