In the beginning section of this essay;” Create a Title and an opening sentence attempt to “hook” the reader. Begin the second paragraph with either the following sentences, or something similar, making a connection to Trevor Noah in Born a Crime: This memory from my childhood came to mind recently while I was reading Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood. Noah, or as I will call him less formally, Trevor, is host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central, and in 2016 he published this memoir about his early years before he came to America. In that book, he.. (in a few sentences, tell us about what it was in the book that helped make you think of the story you told in the first paragraph).  At the end of the second paragraph, include these sentences, or something similar: As I compare my childhood to Trevor’s, I notice that we both ” ” .However, where we differ is that he ” ”. whereas I ” ” Those last sentences will serve as your thesis. Thereafter, in many middle paragraphs that follow, you will develop that thesis with examples and commentary. Throughout the paper, imagine that your potential reader might not know anything about Trevor Noah or the book. Write in such a way that they can follow what you are saying. At least some of your middle paragraphs should only be about Trevor Noah, not about yourself as well. And of those paragraphs, at least two should contain one quotation only, neither at the beginning of the paragraph nor at the end. Instead, give context background information leading into the quotation, and commentary/analysis of the quotation afterward. In other words, I am asking for at least two quotation sandwiches.  Quotation sandwich is when you give a background story and then quote then explain. Some quotations must be from the book and mentioned on the page, and from other online sources.  Here an example of Quotation sandwitch : Although I am often impressed by Patricia’s decision making, at times I am appalled by the way she treats Trevor. He tells us about one time when he was badgering her to buy a toffee apple at a grocery store. He nagged so much that she finally said yes, but when he got to the cashier, she pretended not to know him, saying to the cashier, “Poor little colored boy lost his mother. What a shame” (Noah 81). Sure, this was an effective way to teach Trevor not to nag her to death; when she said no, she meant no. But why wasn’t she worried about the psychological damage she might have been inflicting on him? He was already sensitive about his race, about being different from her and other relatives because of his white father. Maybe part of him feared that his mom would tire of having a son who looked like him. Even if he knew she was pretending to not be his mother, he might have felt that she was expressing a genuine wish not to be his mother. What a devastating impact this could have had on him, destroying his confidence! For the ending section, or conclusion remind us of your thesis without merely repeating it. And Then leave us with a final intriguing or provocative thought. On the first version,  make some predictions about the rest of the book, and ways that you and Trevor will turn out to have some very similar and some very different experiences. Here’s another possibility: remark on the kind of success Trevor has had in his life, before he is even forty years old, and then talk about a dream that you hope comes true for yourself before you’re forty. (Or fifty, or sixty, or seventy, or eighty). At the end of the essay make sure to include the work cited. A list, following MLA guidelines, of all the sources the writer has quoted from.
