Question Answered step-by-step The workplace is a melting pot of nurses from four different generationalcohorts: veterans, baby boomers, generation Xers, and millennials. Often times these generational differences have potential negative outcomes if left unchecked. Negative workplace outcomes may include stressors and errors, incivility, and stereotyping. “An organizational culture comprised of several generations has the potential to flourish if differences are understood and respected” (Moore et al., 2016). My goal is to gather the different generational cohorts and organize team-building activities that will leave all employees less wary of their differences and be able to bond over things that they may have in common. The topics I would include in my presentation on culture and generational diversity for the nursing staff include: educating the nursing staff about the different generations, potential negative outcomes, and the overall effect teamwork has on caring for our patients. I would implement team-building activities to increase trust, open communication, inclusion, and conflict resolution. Team-building process would include multiple training workshops with role-plays and actively engaging nurses to participate 2-3 times throughout the year continually learning and engaging in teamwork building activities. According to a systemic review of team-building interventions by Miller et al., (2018), the median length of team-building was 6 months generated from 18 studies. For open communication, I would include an activity that builds on strategies that work on helping the multiple generations communicate with one another. For this activity, I would use a constructive feedback exercise. This allows all generations to communicate and share knowledge freely without criticism. Trust is an element that a team must have to be successful and may take time to develop. A classic trust building activity is a scavenger hunt which encourages communication, interaction, connection, and trust. “Inclusiveness permits team members to recognize and appreciate what they and others have to offer, esteeming and engaging each member of the team” (Moore et al., 2016). In developing diversity and inclusion, I would include the activity “walk apart, walk together”. This activity encourages individuals to recognize differences and similarities shared with one another. For successful conflict resolution, there must be mutual respect that encompasses open communication, trust, and inclusiveness. The conflict resolution exercise I would add to the workshop is “divide the loot”. This exercise encourages everyone in a group to come to a final decision while working together coming to a fair, compromised negotiation. “A workforce that encompasses several generations must learn to work together, forming teams and recognizing the inherent diversity in order to deliver effective healthcare and meet desired patient outcomes” (Moore et al., 2016).Needs a peer response from a student nurse practitioner’s point of view with rerences Health Science Science Nursing MSN 564 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
