We will usually try and be true to our own identities but often get caught up in the lies that we create to meet the expectation of others. In Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby, who is the protagonist of this book, struggles to hold on to his own identity as he tries to navigate his way through getting back with Daisy. In the book, Gatsby creates an illusion that portrays himself as a wealthy man who comes from old money. As the book progresses, however, it is shown that he was lying to fit in and just wanted to be accepted by Daisy. The focus of this essay will be on the appearances versus realities of Jay Gatsby’s money, identity, and relationship with Daisy. There is no question that Gatsby’s inability to distinguish appearance from reality, and the lies he surrounded himself with, ultimately contributed to his death.At the beginning of the book, Gatsby is introduced as this mysterious figure who likes to throw lavish parties. Despite Gatsby’s apparent wealth, questions continuously arose about how he became so wealthy and whether it was legal. For the same reason, Nick also was suspicious when Gatsby told him about his background, including how he came to be wealthy. This is evident from the line “…his whole statement fell to pieces, and I wondered if there wasn’t something a little sinister about him, after all” (69). Furthermore, for the appearance versus reality regarding Gatsby’s money, the appearance would be the lies that he first tells Nick when they go out for lunch. ” I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West…” (68), ” My family all died and I came into a good deal of money” (69). From these two lines, we see that Gatsby created a story in which he inherited all his money from his family. On the other hand, the reality would be that Gatsby made all of his money through bootlegging alcohol, which was illegal. This can be seen from the line ” He and this Wolfshiem bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter” (142). Thus, the appearance versus reality of Gatsby’s money is the fact that he did not inherit his massive wealth, but instead made it through illegally bootlegging alcohol. Secondly, in addition to the lies that Gatsby creates around how he attained his wealth, he also fabricates an illusion to cover up his true identity. The appearance of Gatsby’s identity would be that he comes from a wealthy family in San Francisco, and he is an Oxford man. This can be seen from the line “San Francisco” (69), “…educated at Oxford…” (68). However, it is apparent that Gatsby is struggling to keep a hold of his fake identity. We can see this from the line ” He hurried the phrase ‘educated at Oxford’, or swallowed it, or choked on it, as though it had bothered him before” (69). In contrast, the reality of Gatsby’s identity would be that he comes from North Dakota where his parents were poor farmers, and his real name is James Gatz. This can be seen from the line “James Gatz- that was really, or at least legally, his name” (104), ” His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people…” (104). Therefore, the appearance versus reality of Gatsby’s identity would be that his real name is James Gatz instead of Jay Gatsby and that he comes from a poor family instead of a rich one. Finally, we should be able to say in confidence that the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy is a critical part of this book. In the beginning, Gatsby and Daisy’s love went both ways, and they deeply cared for one another. This can be seen from the line ” I can’t describe to you how surprised I was to find out I loved her…” (159), “…She was in love with me too.” (159). However, the true love which went both ways ended the moment Daisy chose to move on with her life and forget about Gatsby. In addition, her personality started to shift from being a loving person to more of a materialistic person who is self-centered after marrying Tom. For example, this can be seen at the end of the book when Nick describes Daisy as a careless person who is self-centered. We can see this from the line ” They were careless people…” (190), ” …they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…” (190). Furthermore, the appearance of Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship would be the initial love that they shared for the first time. The love went both ways, and they deeply cared for one another. On the other hand, the reality would be the fact that their relationship was bound to fail. On the outside, Daisy seems to be a charming and lovable person. However, on the inside, she is a materialistic person who only cared about herself. Thus, Daisy would have fallen short of Gatsby’s ideal, who he thought was the same perfect person that he had met for the first time. In summary, Gatsby’s inability to distinguish appearance from reality, and the lies that he surrounded himself with regarding his money, identity, and relationship with Daisy, ultimately contributed to his death.
