Question The following drugs are listed as Schedule 1 Controlled Substances… The following drugs are listed as Schedule 1 Controlled Substances under the federal Controlled Substances Act: heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), cannabis, MDMA, peyote, and psilocybin. According to the DEA, “Schedule I substances are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs are the most dangerous drugs of all the drug schedules with potentially severe psychological or physical dependence.” Schedule II drugs are drugs with a high potential for abuse, less abuse potential than Schedule I drugs, with use potentially leading to severe psychological or physical dependence. These drugs are also considered dangerous but the substance has currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States. Some of the drugs listed as Schedule II Controlled Substances include morphine, cocaine, amphetamine, opium, codeine, phencyclidine (PCP), and methamphetamine.  Discuss if either in support or opposition to these substances’ classification based on how they work at the synapse. Choose at least two specific substances to support or oppose their classification and gather specific evidence to justify the argument. Include information about why the drug was put into its current classification. If you believe that the substance belongs in a different classification, then include to what classification you believe that substance should belong as well as scientific evidence to support your position. If you believe that the substance is properly classified, then include scientific justification to support the continued classification in this category. If you do not believe that drugs should be controlled or classified at all, please feel free to include this.
