Paper details
I have physical disabilities that cause hardships and limit my activities. I was born with Crouzon’s
Syndrome, a genetic disorder in which parts of the baby’s skull fuse prematurely. I had surgery to remove
my tonsils and adenoids when I was 18 months old. I have a hearing impairment in my right ear as the
bones were not independently formed. My left elbow was also dislocated, preventing me from playing
certain sports and workout routines, even dancing. It did not stop me from having fun or enjoying life to the
fullest capacity.
When I was in school, I was subject to bullying and the ridicule of the other students. Other students stared
at me like I was mentally retarded. They teased me and called me names. Although it bothered me as a
child, I came to know who I am, to embrace the unique person that is me. I escaped the depression, the
“woe is me syndrome” and cultivated my interests and passions. I made friends. I was on the high school
basketball team and the music team and participated in events and shows.
I not only grew out of my shell but became a leader. I was respected for my communication skills and ability
to direct and engage others. I became treasurer and then coordinator of an NGO, the Anvaya Youth
Foundation based in Karnataka, India. I found my passion in committing myself to the society, which
brought me happiness.
I hope my story serves as an inspiration to others. I work hard to overcome my challenges. I choose a
positive outlook. I am willing and desirous of sharing my experiences, my story with others to motivate
them. I want to be an example that drive and passion can provide a path to success. Some hardships are
permanent, however, those are often limited by one’s own choices. It is just a matter of attitude adjustment.
Some disabilities are temporary, and the suffering can be mitigated by seeing the accomplishments of
others and adopting a positive outlook because all things change. I want to be a catalyst for that change. I
want to help. I want to embody the qualities of selflove and confidence and pass them on to teenagers and
other who feel defeated.
