Question Students are to prepare a 2 page document considering the following… Students are to prepare a 2 page document considering the following questions/ideas from your reading and practical application: “There is no “I” in team”…anonymous The word “team” usually refers to a small task group in which the members have a common purpose, interdependent roles, and complementary skills (Yukl, 2001). To develop a true picture of effective team functioning, you can consider a Super Bowl team or…the 2001 [Philadelphia] 76ers. Singularly each individual player is a good basketball player, decent shooter, and great dribbler with a tremendous amount of speed. An individual cannot win a championship alone. Moreover, without tall men rebounding, smaller men dribbling and passing to one another with a good coach, the team would have been only fair rather than great. Now add, a good coach who can teach the game and develop plays, a point guard who lightening speed to steal and dribble around opponents and a leader on the court encouraging the rest of the players to play beyond their capabilities. Now you have a winning combination! It’s amazing what a functional team with a great leader can do! For a team to be functional, all members must have an interdependent role in which they complete their assigned tasks. Leadership is essential!!! Usually the responsibilities fall on the formal leader, although other group members may assist in performing specific leadership functions. A good leader knows how to blend the unique skills of the individual into the development of a functional team by knowing the strengths and challenges of the team members. The head nurse of a small cohesive PACU once took 6 months to replace one nurse. She had multiple reasons for taking her time. The first reason was that the unit was small and the nurses had to work in close proximity to one another. Next, she had to consider the “culture” of the team. The use of “culture” in this context denotes a style of interaction among group members, their temperament, and values. She wanted someone to enhance the flow of the work and not impede it. She needed an individual with a similar emotional make up as the others. In other words, she did not want to disrupt the flow and the effectiveness of what she considered a great team. To be an effective team leader, the following behaviors are employed: Planning and organization team operationsVision, expressing confidence, celebrating progressShared decision makingCoaching, training, and clarifying member role expectationsSupport, team building, managing conflict (it’s there…it will always be there….)Facilitating team learning and innovationNetworking, monitoring and scanning the external environmentRepresenting, promoting, lobbying, negotiatingRecruiting and selecting team members(Yukl, 2001)When considering the development of a team, one realizes that there is no perfect system. You deal with fallible human beings on a daily basis. To improve the functioning of the team, the leader can consider the Myers Briggs type indicator to identify personality styles that can enhance the team. By understanding the personality of the team, the leader can determine assignments and responsibilities that would be appropriate for the individual. A quieter nurse may not shine as the charge nurse or nurse educator. He/she may enjoy the solitude of a ventilator patient or working on audits. The role of the leader is to find the strengths of the individual and enhance them. Conversely, the good leader will also work in tandem with the individual to improve the weaknesses of the nurse thereby enhancing the individual and team effectiveness.
