(SDOH) are conditions and environments that impact the health, function, and quality of life of people. SDOH examples include language, literacy skills, access to nutritious food, physical activity opportunities, education, income, job stability, employment, domestic violence, transportation access, safe housing, clean air, potable water, housing, and more. It follows along with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs where if a person’s basic needs of food, shelter, and water are not met they cannot meet other needs such as safety. With SDOH, if a patient does not have access to healthy foods it will result in poor nutrition which will cause health issues at some point in their life. As a result, just promoting healthy eating to that patient will likely result in other health disparities as that patient may not have access to other determinates of health. One SDOH I can apply to my work experience is transportation. The health care organization is in a neighborhood with poor public transit access. Patients or employees who do not have a vehicle have to walk 1 mile to the clinic from the closest bus stop if they are physically capable of making that walk. In addition, bus schedules prevent some employees from attending early or late meetings because they won’t be able to get to or from the clinic. This determinant affected the cultural challenges at my workplace because there is a quarterly departmental meeting for one department that starts at 6 AM and the department’s meetings start at 7 PM and last until 10 PM. This is outside the times the bus could get the employee to or from the clinic. The leader of the organization publicly chastises the people who must leave early to get home or come in late to the meeting that starts early. This is without talking to them one-on-one to find out they cannot attend those meetings fully due to lack of their own transportation. If this was considered, the meeting times could be adjusted so everyone can attend. READ THE ABOVE. What do you agree and disagree with? What did you find interesting? What else might you add? Explain.
