Question Answered step-by-step Response to. This is a huge question. The bulk of social work… Response to. This is a huge question. The bulk of social work within the mental health system for children, is through schools and, to a lesser degree, pediatricians. In reading through the chapter, I saw a lot that looked so good, that is supposed to be coming out of schools; counseling, advocacy, facilitating, educating, consulting, and general coaching on life as children grow and change. Schools are supposed to provide a safe place for kids to become themselves, as much as learning the academics. From what I have read, and seen, some schools seem to have this down, and in affluent areas, have the funding to make this a reality. Unfortunately, one way the system needs to be improved, in in streamlining this for all schools in all communities, regardless of economic status. Kids go through so many changes, and face so much as they age; to offer the most opportunity for success, the schools need to be given the resources necessary for the employ of social workers, and then those social workers should be communicating with the teachers, students and parents to smooth obstacles before they are out of control, whether that means and IEP, or just further discussion. There is no way to make adolescence easy, but we can ease the way. Worthy of note, is also pediatricians being involved in not just physical health, but how it relates to mental health, and watching for the need for additional mental health resources. If both systems could work in tandem, we could support kids as whole people and help keep them from falling through the cracks, or drowning when they don’t know how to ask for help directly.
