Do you agree or disagree and why?  In the article Reading Literature Makes Us Smarter and Nicer, I found the information which was surprising to me was that someone would state “that we ought no to claim that literature improves us as people” (Paul). I believe that reading makes us smarter, nicer and better people. I also believe that what one reads, such as fiction, non-fiction, novels, can mold people to be who they are. I would agree with the study from 2006 and 2009 “that individuals who often read fiction appear to be better able to understand other people, empathize with them and view the world from their perspective” (Paul). The information in which I found interesting is that “Deep reading – is an endangered practice, one we ought to take steps to preserve as we would a historic building or a significant work of art” (Paul) This paragraph was most likely the one which caught my attention the most. I know more and more people, especially the younger generation, read more on the web as opposed to an actual book. I wonder, does reading a book off a Kindle, or similar device, make it different? I remember going to the library and checking out books, is this still something done in school? Makes me wonder since most students have iPads now. In my own experience and/or observations, I agree with this article. I have said this time and time again that modern technology has taken away from life in general. It is rare that you see younger children/students read an actual book unless it is made mandatory by the teacher. Most of society today is obsessed with their electronic devices. I remember when one needed information you would actually read books to research information. Deep reading an actual book allows people to use their imagination and connect with the author “by creating a mental representation that draws on the same brain regions that would be active if the scene were unfolding in real life” (Paul). When reading off the web, as the article states, there are distractions such as links in which one can click on and be redirected. I would say this article makes sense and describes today’s world. I would much rather pick up a book and read than to read off the web.   Arts & Humanities Writing ENGLISH 1302 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
