Good evening my fellow citizens of Utica, New York, I’m one of your city councilmen Nathaniel Johnson and I’m calling for the immediate release of all slaves for both Confederate and Union states. This act of enslaving others is completely unjust, inhuman, and downright cruel. How can we, as free and honest citizens participate in a behavior that completely strips another human of all qualities, we take for granted. We sit at our tables and eat freely celebrating both liberty and equality but only to those that look like us. Let me remind everyone that we were not the first men to discover this new land and although I completely understand that we as men, who are looked upon to produce and provide, can find other avenues to sufficiently ensure all of our fellow New Yorkers and countrymen can survive without enslaving another human being.I know that I will upset many men, women, and children with my demand for the immediate release of all slaves but please hear me out and then decide afterwards. A gradual decision to emancipate slaves is a terrible idea and in my opinion, has not been clearly thought through in its entirety. We can’t slowly grant a small percentage of people their natural born right to freedom while an even larger portion of these people are still slaves. What kind of message are we sending doing this type of act?! That “WE” are still in control. No matter if you are considered a slave or was recently granted your freedom, if we can even call it that, “WE” were the individuals who decided you should have your freedom. As a man, living in this land of opportunity, I can’t imagine everything being taken away from me. Some were born into this mindset as others were born as slaves. There are good people here in Utica, New York and I know that I, Nathaniel Johnson am one of those good people who feels that if we were to work together instead of you working for me, we the results could be endless and there is less turmoil. How can we decide how a set of people will live or thrive once we decide to grant them freedom? This makes absolutely no sense at all. Again, it all comes down to control. We control if we are to give them freedom, how many will be granted this at a certain time, and we decide that it’s not a good idea to just release everyone at the same time because we feel as though they won’t be able to survive on their own?!As free men and women I will leave you all with this, despite the absence of most able-bodied white men, blacks didn’t engage in the kind of massive insurrection that some Confederates had feared but why is this? Just like this question, I also have the answer. These black men were born into slavery and that is all they know. They have been trained since a child for them to understand this is the life they will know, and nothing will get better than this. So for example, if all I know is living on a farm in Montgomery. 2. My name is Dr. Jacob Jefferson. I’m currently a Politician in Connecticut. My friends and I were talking, and the subject of freeing slaves came about. That was very mind blowing! Many were against the fact, because they relied on the free labor to earn money. This was soon approaching, so we wondered how it would go about? My friends were throwing out many ideas, and some I didn’t agree with. So I gave the idea of gradual emancipation. Many questioned gradual emancipation, not knowing the meaning. So, I simply gave a brief definition of the concept of gradual emancipation. Gradual emancipation is slowly freeing enslaved people over time, this would help slaves work towards a new beginning. Freeing them with no education, will create another problem though. Since slaves were only taught how to work. This wouldn’t be very successful if we don’t properly plan how to resolve this problem. We will have to teach them how to read and educate so this can work properly. If not, this plan will fail the African American people as whole setting them up to fail.If we work together to help emancipate slaves, and teach them how to be free. This could be great for our nation, and open up many opportunities for the African American society. I believe this is a great way to grow from our past of working them for free labor. We brought many from across the world, destroyed families and more. As we all know slavery is a terrible part of our history that we need to gradually move forward from. Unfortunately, we don’t have a time machine to change the terrible events that have happened. As your elected official I believe we should work together to gradually free slaves. Therefore everyone will have equal rights and Freedom. Arts & Humanities Writing COM 090 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
