Reply to each student’s post separately by having a connection to the student’s post. The 1st student’s post is talking about:   How is social movement activity possible? Briefly describe the concept of structuration. Briefly Describe the social movement theory that I presented. What are the elements? What are the types of targets that social movement organizations direct their energy?  The 1st Student’s post:  A social movement is where a group of people is for or against an issue like climate change or racism. It is possible because of how it is a lot easier to set one up today because all a person needs to do is go onto social media and set it up and if it seems appealing enough and a big enough issue, many people will probably show up and show support. The concept of structuration is creation or reproduction of systems that are based off of agents and structure in order to re make a better society. The social movement theory is where there are many steps/ elements to make a change in a community. The elements are having a target, such as change in the government or cultural norms, then getting into a group and trying to achieve change until it is actually fully achieved. In order to get a group and get it fully achieved, it probably will help for them to communicate the issue and do some group planning that will take place, but setting it up on a social media platform as many people look on there today and feel like that is where they get their actual education that they need for the real outside world. Using the internet, especially social media today could help get the event set up faster too because it is a lot faster than putting up ads around the street, since a lot of people in today’s society have internet at home and use social media more than they should. They also then need to set up a place to meet such as a public area or buildings. They also may want to create some unifying phrases as well. The types of movements that they direct their energy to are to better the society by changing the government, or changing cultural norms.   ———————————————————————————————————————————————————— The 2nd post topic is talking about: In what ways do social movement organizations engage in deviant behavior? What are some of the tactics that hey use that could be considered deviant or even criminal? How does engaging in deviant behavior affect the OUTCOMES of the struggle in which they are engaging? In what ways do the outcomes of social movements affect what is considered deviant in a society? Do social movements change norms? How?  The 2nd Student’s post: Social movements are considered deviant behavior to some from the very start. Social movements are organized groups that hope to bring change to society in a way they see fit. Something that might be seen as criminal behavior is looting. I remember back in 2020 when people were walking the streets for the Black Lives Matter movement there was some looting going around. Many felt as if they could not support the movement seeing as what they were doing to gather change was not okay to them. Looting was not a part of the movement but some people were using this movement as a way to destroy the community and as a result that the movement slowly started to carry a bad image. The deviant behavior will affect the change people were hoping to gain with protesting. Some people could not look past the looting to look at the big issue at hand which was how the system is corrupt and there needed to be changed because this had been going on for too long. The outcome of social movements affects what is considered deviant in society because what was once seen as deviant behavior is not becoming normalized and soon what was normalized will now be deviant behavior. So the two will change place in how society either accepts them or will reject them. I do believe social movements change norms because they add new norms to society. For example, Malala Yousafzai, who is an advocate for female education changed society’s options on the matter and got society to accept a new norm. Also, the #MeToo movement which is a way to spread awareness of sexual abuse and gives a platform for others to share their stories. This opened up society to the discussion about sexual abuse and help bring change to the matter. Social Science Sociology SOCIOLOGY 25598 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
