Question Answered step-by-step reply to this post You are running an activity group where the patientsare painting pictures of the happiest day of their lives. A patient becomes agitated that they cannot think of a happy day and starts throwing the paintbrushes across the room, yelling and screaming. What do you do? First, it would be important to quickly de-escalate the situation by gaining the attention of the client and using distraction or relaxation techniques to stop the undesired behaviors (Boyd & Luebbert, p. 119, 2020). Once the client is calmed down and is no longer throwing brushes and yelling, to restore positive milieu I would eliminate the possible stressor that precipitated the event. The client stated that they couldn’t think of a happy day, so instruct them to paint a different picture. Using positive reinforcement for the calming techniques and when desired behaviors are seen could help prevent an episode like this in the future.
