One of the patients frequently raises their hand asking questions about medications that you know they aren’t prescribed. You don’t want to discourage questions, but you worry that answering this patient is taking up time from the other patients’ who might have questions too. What should you do?The intent of milieu therapy is to provide stable and coherent social organization which facilitates an individual’s growth and achievement of treatment goals (Boyd & Luebbert, 2020). Open communication is an important concept within this framework, as such, the environment should be arranged to promote optimal interaction and effective communication. This includes support, attention, praise, and reassurance to improve patient self-esteem while increasing confidence. Patient education is part of support that helps develop coping skills (Boyd & Luebbert, 2020). This patient may be considered a “monopolizer” since they are repeatedly asking questions, however, this behavior is common in early stages of group settings and reflects the anxiety the patient might be experiencing (Boyd & Luebbert, 2020). For these reasons, it would be best to validate the patient, demonstrating the respect that is required in functional therapeutic relationships. I would acknowledge and support their interest in learning about the different medications but also remind them that the group session is a structured interaction. Structure in daily interaction is essential to functioning for both the group and the individual, however, the context of the individual’s needs should also be considered (Boyd & Luebbert, 2020 Health Science Science Nursing NUR 3150 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
