Question REPLY TO THIS POST When dealing with groups of people, there will always be a variety of personalities involved. During group sessions, it is important to have a positive milieu for all participants. Milieu therapy refers to the therapeutic environment. The goal is to enhance the setting’s therapeutic potential (Boyd et al., 2020). In this particular situation, there is a patient that keeps interrupting the group discussion with questions that don’t really pertain to them. In this setting there should be all of the concepts of milieu therapy put in place. First, there should be containment, which is allowing for a safe space for all patients involved. It is also important to address the patient and allow them to have open communication within the safe space. Another concept that is important is to provide validation to the patient. To me the most important concept that needs to be enforced is the structured interaction. For the first few interruptions, it should be allowed that the patient is asking a lot of questions. However, when it gets to a point where it starts to be excessive, and it’s noticed that they’re not even asking questions that apply to them, it is important to have a structured interaction with them. Within this, I believe that the nurse should speak with kind firmness and tell this patient that they will gladly answer all of their questions after the group discussion. It is important that other patients feel as though they can be heard in a safe space and have their questions answered as well. Hopefully, by utilizing these concepts we will be able to restore a positive milieu. Health Science Science Nursing NUR 3150 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
