Having the capacity to distinguish the differences and similarities of the world we live in compared to our own personal experiences frames our mindset for having a social imagination. We live in a world with multiple different social issues like human rights, poverty, childhood obesity, and unemployment just to name a few. The text sheds some light on the ongoing issues in our society and how they negatively affect our lives. Using conflict theory, it considers how society is held together by power (Ritzer 2000). Using this theory is a strong argument when speaking on the increase of college tuition. The government is our body of power that sets the tone for the constant inflation in our society for everything including the tuition cost and everything that revolves around education. According to nces.gov, the average tuition and fees for a four year public school were $9,400 in the year 2019-2020 which was a 13% increase from 2010-2011 (National Center for Education Statistics. 2021).  The structural functional theory in regards for education emphasizes the need for society to develop a higher learning skill set in order to maintain stability. Although, the need for education is stressed, the 8% increase yearly in tuition will deter the lower and middle class individuals from attending college (finaid.org) The increase in tuition hinders these individuals the most but remains a public issue. It is encouraged that we receive a higher level of education therefore the public should assist those who truly need it the most. It is unfair that we all can not be awarded the same opportunities due to financial situations that we are born into. Some individuals have the financial means to afford the increase in tuition and other costs while some struggle to even find their next meal. Financial aid is obviously there to help certain individuals, but it also is not the most helpful. If public assistance was more readily available for everyone regardless of social and income status, the idea of higher levels of education would be more available and encouraged.” Arts & Humanities Philosophy SOC 220 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
