Question Answered step-by-step There is considerable workload placed on RNs. Delegation is an essentialtool used by RNs allowing them to successfully provide all the necessary care to their patients within specified timeframes, with competence and compassion. Nursing is, after all, a team sport. The biggest fear in allowing unlicensed professionals to administer medication is rooted in the risk of increasing medication errors.  Research on medication errors show most medication-related errors occur in hospital settings where nurses administer most medications, totaling about 5% to 10% of all errors in hospital settings (Bucknall et al., 2019).  Medical literature also states about one-third of all medical errors causing harm to hospitalized patients occurs during the preparation and administration phases which are both predominately nursing activities (Bucknall et al., 2019).  If we are to allow non-licensed medical personnel to administer medications, we could limit the risk for poor outcomes associated with adverse effects by limiting the types of medications they can administer. Allowing non licensed staff to only administer meds a patient has routinely received and demonstrated to tolerate well.
