When confronted with the characteristics of the incised wounds, the patient admitted the "cuts" were self-inflicted with a knife, and the history of a sexual assault was fabricated. The careful analysis of the wounds and recognition of the self-inflicted characteristics by the forensic nurse permitted the treating physician to have the patient admitted to the psychiatric unit. In addition, the detective did not need to spend time looking for a hooded suspect that did not exist. The use of a forensic nurse was clearly a benefit to the patient and the criminal justice system. Explain what the forensic nurse should document in this case. Document as you would begin with the patient history, and be sure to include a detailed description of the wounds (using the pictures provided in the book).
