Question Purpose:Task: This is an individual reflection assignment. References must be provided. As is quite obvious at this point in the semester, technological advances often outpace ethical discussions and policy decisions. The electronic health record (EHR) is no exception, nor is social media. These platforms result in the availability of large stores of data, called big data in the literature. It is essential for nurses to understand how to work with big data and how to advocate for the ethical use of patients’ data as well as how to advocate for ethical protections through influencing health care policy. This reflection will provide you with an opportunity to reflect on your own biases and positions on this topic and to advocate for your position using support from the literature. Please address the following questions:Discuss a minimum of one ethical concern/issue which surrounds the use of the electronic health record (EHR).Who owns a patient’s EHR data? Explain your answer.Should EHR data be available to researchers? Explain your answer.Discuss how can big data in the EHR be protected.Discuss your responsibility as a nurse to ethically use social media. Do you have a responsibility if you’re using social media on your personal time? Why or why not? Support your perspective with evidence.Note that, for 3 of the questions listed for this assignment, you must address at least one (1) of Provisions 4, 5, or 7 of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses. Criteria for Success: Be thoughtful, thorough in your responses and support your viewpoint with evidence. Remember, when advocating your perspective, the difference between opinion and a sound ethical argument that should be strongly considered is the defense of your perspective using primary source, peer-reviewed references.
