Access to health data is good for improving care and drives patient satisfaction. Patients who do not have access to all their PHRs may experience a lot of challenges. One of the challenges is that patient may not be able to use all the features that might be available to them. This is because, some EHRs are not compatible with other EHRs, therefore, if a patient has access to one, he may be unable to make use of it. Additionally, PHRs only collect data about certain aspects of patient’s condition. For example, if a patient has multiple chronic illnesses, their PHR may not be able to track all conditions at once because it’s difficult for an app to keep up with all the information required by each condition. This can make it difficult for patient who need access to more than one condition understand what is currently happening to them. Another challenge is computer or smartphone literacy. There are some people who are not good at using electronic devices. Most common are the elderly population. Some elderly patients lack insight of what to search or where to search for information in PHRs, because of this difficulty, they are unable to manage their medications, keep to appointment and track their data effectively.
