Question Answered step-by-step Please respond and build on this reflection that I made. Respond to… Please respond and build on this reflection that I made. Respond to the reflection based on the readings that I will add below. For question 4. Try to answer the question that it was written as well.  What did you learn? In this reading, I learned about the barriers that women face following their acute coronary syndrome and into cardiac rehabilitation. There are patient factors and health system factors that affect women’s CR participation some of which include under recognition of their disease, transportation, lack of encouragement, physician bias, and co-ed programs. One of the larger health system factors that affect women is physician bias. I learned that despite there being awareness of sex differences in cardiac rehab women are still referred less than men. This may be caused by the fact that women have higher incidences of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and microvascular disease compared to men. Another reason is that physicians unconsciously refer patients based on sex. To overcome these barriers, I learned that decreasing the time to enroll is important as longer enrollment times have a direct negative effect on a patient’s outcomes from cardiovascular disease and increase risk. Another way would be to increase referrals this benefits men as well and can be done through bedside referrals and systemic inpatient referrals. Why is it important?Learning about cardiac rehabilitation in women is important as it provides better insight into the different barriers that men and women face and ways to mitigate them. In addition, by identifying these barriers, CR centers will be able to create better programs that are designed for women to increase referrals and enrolment. Doing so much research about women in CR emphasizes the importance and benefits of CR to the public and physicians/cardiologists that do not think that CR is beneficial. How does the material relate to your life? No one in my family has a history or currently has a cardiovascular disease but my grandmother has done rehabilitation for her leg after surgery. After reading this paper I get the sense of the barriers that women face not only in CR but also in other types of rehabilitation. Without my relatives assisting my grandmother would not have been encouraged enough to finish her rehabilitation. What questions do you now have about the topic?A question that I have regarding this topic is do the underrepresentation of women in CR also appear in other rehabilitation programs and the hospital? For example, in the hospital for instance, does it affect priorities of who gets treated first etc.?  Health Science Science Nursing KINE 4720 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
