It is important while comparing The New-England Primer and The McGuffey Reader, to note that The New-England Primer was the main text used for reading instruction adapted from previous texts brought from England. However, as the United States became a country, The McGuffey Reader gained popularity and continued to be the main source for reading instruction through the 19th century (Smith, 2020).            The McGuffey Readers were filled with stories of strength, character, goodness and truth. The McGuffey Reader taught children to seek an education and continue to learn throughout their lives (Hayes, 2015). On the other hand, The New England Primer was used to teach children their alphabets from the 1500s to the 18th century (Smith, 2018). In addition, The New England Primer included a greater degree of religions content and emphasized eternal damnation in hell as punishment for wrongdoing whereas The McGuffey Readers focused on practical consequences children might experience on earth for lacking in kindness or productivity (Smith, 2018). In other words, although a forerunner to the basal readers of both and 21st centuries The McGuffey Readers were distinctly different form The New England Primer. Meghan, I agree with you clarification and assessment of the difference between The McGuffey readers and the earlier New England Primer. In addition, unlike modern basals which are conceived and produced by publishers, 19th century readers like McGuffey’s were largely written and complied by a single author normally a clergy man or school master (Smith, 2018). Furthermore, although they were not as stern in moralizing as The New England Primer had been The McGuffey Readers clearly taught a Calvinistic ethic which reflected the moral tone of the time and wove it into the fabric of American society (Smith, 2018). Like the modern basals, McGuffey’s stories resonated with what children found interesting such as fables about animals and play. While comparing The McGuffey Readers and The New England Primer, it is important to note that though moralistic about many issues, including cruelty to animals, The McGuffey Readers did not address the injustice of slavery as the textbook of New England had. However, The McGuffey Readers and The New England Primer both played extremely influential roles in American education (Smith, 2020). Furthermore, The McGuffey Readers were useful in standardizing the English language as well as, similar to The New England Primer in shaping moral values of the United States.References Kasten, P.
