The victim in the case was Payton Leutner and was stabbed multiple times by both girls. The reasoning for this instead of the Life Course Persistent Delinquent, is based on some of the main criteria of ALD. Both delinquents were females, which is one difference from LCPD, as many of those adolescents are males. Another factor is evident in parental support available to both girls. It is not evident that abuse has taken place, so this could eliminate them from the LCPD. Since the girls were motivated by the idea of appeasing “Slenderman”, which is a fictional character from the media, this relates to the concept of seeking approval from adults even though this is not a real person. Another factor that places them in ALD instead of LCPD is that the girls planned this violent crime and did not act on impulsivity as seen in LCPD. This reasoning is why I would place them in Over Pathway over the other two which include a lesser crime or nonviolent crime.In terms of risk factors of these adolescents the lack of family support plays a part. I would say the parenting styles the girls had allowed them to feel as if this was acceptable to commit a crime. Peer pressure also played a role, in that Morgan was seen as more of the leader over Anissa and more or less pressured her to continue the assualt on Payton. The media was another risk factor in that the fictional character of “Slenderman” justified this crime and the girls essentially sought out the approval of the character. Gender was not really a risk factor here, as males are seen as more aggressive and related to more violent crimes. The mental health of both girls could also be seen as a risk factor, as they planned this crime and both believed it was acceptable. Both girls were also sentenced to mental health instituitions. As far as resiliency factors, I did not find any that I could place. I would say some factors though that could have reduced the likelihood of this crime would have been more involved parents and those who would not allow movies or media such as “Slenderman” to be introduced to their children. Media and parenting are the two main resiliency factors, but perhaps a better peer group for both girls would have been another option.
