Although most people engage in relatively mild activities, should people be permitted to carry out their desires no matter what? Is there a line that can be crossed and, if so, where do you draw that line?”Safe, sane and consensual is the mantra of most in the BDSM community” (Lehmiller, 2017). BDSM can be healthy part of any sexual relationship as long as it done in a safe, sane and consensual way. Therefore, I don’t believe that people should be allowed to carry out their desires no matter what, if it affects or at the expense of someone else. Our applied final project focused on behaviors of a sexually healthy adult. One of these behaviors is engaging in consensual sexual behaviors. That being said, if your partner is comfortable with you carrying out your sexual desires, then so be it. Even so, there should be a mutual understanding of boundaries and what lines shouldn’t be crossed. That line should be discussed and agreed upon by both parties prior to the BDSM sexual activities taking place. If your partner is uncomfortable with your sexual desires and is not interested in participating, then the sexual activities shouldn’t happen. Either way, I think that it is important to discuss your sexual wants and needs with your partner early and often.ReferenceLehmiller, J. (2017). The Psychology of Human Sexuality. I believe that what people do behind closed doors is their own business and no one else’s. After reading the course materials this week, it seems as though BDSM fatalities are extremely rare with asphyxiation by strangulation being the most frequently occurring. In addition to strangulation being a prevalent cause, drug use was also commonly cited in the study conducted by Schorim Jackowski, and Schon (2021).With the wide range of activities that comprise BDSM, it seems incredibly vital to know exactly what one is getting into and to establish boundaries with all partners. The inclusion of both a safe word and safe gesture can probably save lives, especially in breath play. Breath play is the act of limiting breath by a variety of means (constricting the neck, holding one’s breath, using masks or gags, or blocking the nose and/or mouth) (Breath-play & risk). It also seems of the utmost importance to engage in these behaviors sober. There is a wealth of knowledge surrounding the ways drug use impairs both one’s judgement and reflexes, affecting how people perceive their surroundings and their reaction times. Individuals participating in BDSM need to be able to read the situation and react accordingly in a timely manner. As an extremely vanilla individual, I believe that as long as consenting adults engage in BDSM mindfully, there are no limits.ReferenceBreath-play & risk – what you need to know.
