Question Answered step-by-step Patient Information System – Case Study Your company has recently… Patient Information System – Case StudyYour company has recently developed a patient information system for NSW governmenthealth community centres (HCC). The health community centres focus on child and familyhealth and provide multiple services. The patient information system will maintain theinformation about the patients and the treatments they have received. The children’shealth needs to be continuously monitored and they need to attend community centresregularly where they can meet their dedicated nurses/doctors who have detailedknowledge of their problems. Mostly, these community centres are in every suburb. The Patient Information System (PIS) is intended to be used in all the community centres. The patient’s records are stored in a centralized database which can be accessed througha web application. The HCC staff can access the database through the Internet and a localbackup is created for every suburb’s HCC on their local machine. The main functions ofthe PIS are:1. To maintain the records of their patients and the treatments.2. To effectively retrieve the information to support the treatment of the patients.3. To generate the performance reports that can be used to access the performanceof HCC against government health goals. The users of PIS include clinical staff such as doctors, nurses and health visitors (nurseswho visit children at home to check). The non-medical users include receptionists whomake appointments, medical records staff who maintain the records system andadministrative staff who generate reports.PIS is used to record information about patients (name, address, age, next of kin, etc.),consultations (date, time, doctor, etc.), conditions and treatments. Reports aregenerated at regular intervals for medical staff and health authority managers. Typically,ITAP3009 Software Analysis, Design and Architecturereports for medical staff focus on information about individual patients whereasmanagement reports are anonymized and are concerned with conditions, costs oftreatment, etc.The key features of the system are:1. Doctors/Nurses can create, edit, delete or add the records for patients. They canalso view patient history. The system supports data summaries so that doctorswho have not previously met a patient can quickly learn about the key problemsand treatments that have been prescribed.2. PIS regularly monitors the records of patients that are involved in the treatmentand notify if they miss their appointments.3. The system generates monthly management reports showing the number ofpatients treated at each community centre, the number of patients who haveentered and left the PIS system, the medicines prescribed and their costs, etc.As in all medical systems, privacy is a critical system requirement. Patient informationmust be is confidential and is never disclosed to anyone apart from authorisedmedical staff and the patient. The overall design of the system has to take intoaccount privacy and safety requirements. As a software tester, you are asked to test the PIS.
