He lives at home with his wife Helena, who has been feeling overwhelmed over the past 2 months. Helena expressed to their neighbour how exhausted she has been feeling, and concerned George still has a “chest cold”. The neighbour had noted over the past days, George absence from his vegetable garden and the lawn was becoming long. The neighbour offered to bring over some dinner that evening, and was alarmed to find George looking frail and weak resting in his recliner. Helena became teary, and it was obvious to the neighbour the couple required assistance. An ambulance was called, and Mr Bakas was admitted to hospital with an elevated temperature, productive cough and rapid laboured respirations. You are the admitting nurse and working in collaboration with a Registered Nurse. During the admission you discover that Mr Bakas has had a “chest cold” for 2 weeks. He has finished a course of oral antibiotics however remains unwell with a worsening moist cough. He rates this pain 6/10 and denies taking any analgesia. He is diagnosed with pneumonia and commenced on intravenous antibiotics.You ask Mr Bakas about his normal sleep routine and discover that he has not slept properly for days, feels exhausted and finds it difficult to concentrate. He has been taking OTC “cold and flu” medications for the past 3 weeks, alongside his usual medications:Metformin 500mg TDSDigoxin 50mcg ODSomac 40mg OD He is pale, drawn with dark circles under his eyes and complaining of fatigue.
