The other two characters that I selected from Ovid’s Metamorphoses are Medea and Thisbe. Let’s start with the comparison of Dido & Eurydice. Dido is the queen of Carthage, and she was loyal to her husband is competent and adamant of her actions. Aeneas ships crashes near Carthage and Dido welcomes him and his crew happily. Aeneas explains her about the woes he faced during the war of Trojan, and this certainly made them closer. Due to god’s manipulation, Dido fell in love with Aeneas, and he too certainly enjoyed spending time with her. Though their love didn’t carry on for much as Aeneas was destined to leave for Italy as it was his fate lied in establishing a new city. Jupiter sent Mercury to convey Aeneas that his destiny lies somewhere else, and he must leave. Aeneas agrees and Dido certainly suspects that something is wrong. When she confronts Aeneas, it made her extremely sad as she failed in persuading him to stay. She couldn’t handle this extreme sadness and asked Anna to build a funeral pyre. On that night when Aeneas left, she jumped into the pyre and killed herself. Thisbe is a character that appears in Ovid’s metamorphoses and was the lover of Pyramus. They both lived in connected houses but couldn’t marry each other because of their parent’s rivalry. They decided to meet near the tomb of Ninus under a mulberry tree. Thisbe arrived first but she saw a lioness with blood spilling from her mouth approaching her. She flew and dropped her scarf on the way. Now when Pyramus arrived, he saw the footsteps of a lioness and saw Thisbe’s scarf which she dropped while running. To this, he concluded that the lioness must have killed her. He commits suicide and later when Thisbe returns and found Pyramus’s body on the ground, she is extremely depressed, mourned for a while and later killed herself with her own sword. Here we see a similarity in how both the poets shattered the dreams, hopes, and plans of both the couples. Both the tales did not possess a happy ending. Both poets emphasized on how love is the main problem. If Thisbe and Pyramus would not have been in love, they would not have met under the tree and could be saved from getting killed whereas on the other hand, if Dido wouldn’t have fallen for Aeneas, she would have been alive because she could have thought realistically.
