She has discovered a history of osteoporosis in her family and comes to the clinic to see if she has it or is going to “come down with it.” She has two children in their early 20s not living at home. Vital signs are normal. The height listed on her driver’s license, issued 6 years ago, is 5’3 1/2”. She is a well-nourished, perimenopausal female. She reports smoking for about 5 years, from her late teens to her early 20s; never been a big milk drinker, works in an office, and is too tired when she comes home to exercise regularly. She reports menarche at age 15½ years, with her last menstrual period 3 months ago, “but they have been messed up for the last year”. Mrs. Sneed performs monthly breast self-examinations, which have been negative, and her yearly mammograms are also negative. This has caused her to be very anxious about her future well-being as well as the future health of her daughters.
