Case study 1 You are the Special Needs Assistant. Case Study 1- John aged 5 recently diagnosed with ASD (Autism spectrum disorder) & ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ) John is attending mainstream primary school. You have been employed as a SNA for John for 7 weeks. John is in a class of 23 students. John is the only child with an assessment of special needs in his class. John is midway in the age range of the class. John is in Junior Infants in a village school. John was diagnosed with mild ASD and ADHD a year ago, his parents are currently coming to terms with the diagnosis and are fully engaged in supporting him and want what is best for their son. The class teacher, along with some parents have discussed their concerns that John is disrupting the class and main stream education may not be the most suitable for him. The SENO is due to visit the school in a week’s time to reassess John. John has very poor communication skills, he speaks continuously in an agitated tone and only replies when he requires something. Otherwise he presents as a child who shouts a lot when communicating and doesn’t engage with any of his classmates and wanders around the playground at break time. John loses his temper regularly throughout the day (usually because his routine has been broken or he doesn’t want to do something), he can interrupt the class for anything up to an hour. Many of the children in the class are “scared” of John’s behavior and actions. Intellectually John is achieving his milestones and he particularly enjoys using ICT (iPad, phone etc) and has very good skills in this area. However he detests any activity where his hands may get dirty. John instinctively lashes out or kicks when he is particularly upset or angry. His attention to detail and concentration level is poor and he requires a lot of movement breaks due to his diagnosis of ADHD. Case Study 2 – Emma aged 8 – Down Syndrome with SPD Emma is an 8-year old child with a diagnosis of Down Syndrome. Emma has a multiple diagnosis which includes a mild General Learning Difficulty and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD); particularly hyper sensitivity to noise. Emma is a vocal child who loves to spend time with her two sisters Jan and Sally. She enjoys reading books, going to the school library, music, and playing on the computer. Emma communicates most of her wants and needs verbally. She does have difficulty with language. She currently attends speech and language therapy at her school and is working on how to express herself appropriately as Emma’s immediate reaction to becoming frustration is to hit out. Emma has extreme difficulty in the areas of fine motor skills, attention, focus and temper outbursts. Emma is attending mainstream primary school. She has a resource/learning support teacher for 10 hours per week and a Special Needs Assistant daily. Emma is in a class with 25 other children and is the only child with special needs. Emma is fully included in her classroom. She participates in all classroom assignments and activities. Emma is very aware of her surroundings and insists on doing paper and pencil task like her peers. Although these tasks are difficult for her, she gets very upset if she cannot do them. Since fine motor tasks cause her to be frustrated, the school has Emma use an i Pad. Emma will complete the task like the other children and then do the task a second time on her i Pad. Emma has a difficult time staying on task for long periods of time. She often becomes frustrated with her assignment and will say no, run around the classroom, throw herself on the floor, or hit the classroom assistant. While the classroom assistant can easily redirect her, the school is concerned about her behaviors in the classroom and how it affects the learning environment for the other students. Emma’s teacher has a difficult time giving her the same assignments as the other students because she knows that it causes her to be frustrated. On the other hand, Emma’s parents have requested that she receives the same activities and work as her peers. Arts & Humanities Writing CHILDCARE CHC50113 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
