Language struggles come up over and over in my research and in the general research on refugee students. Although only 3% of refugees ever resettle to the ‘West’, they typically add a new language component to inclusive classroom environments in most all contexts within which they find themselves.Some argue that special education teachers are best equipped to help support refugees with language issues since they are trained in basic communication skill development while most gen-ed teachers are not. ELL (often referred to as L2+ these days) are obvious choices of expert support but these specialists are generally less prevalent in our schools.What are your thoughts concerning how we support refugee students in our classrooms with regard to language? Since it can be argued that all refugee students have emotional difficulties (and thus could be considered for IEP support)… should Special Education teacher training programs include ELL basics in such training?
