Question Answered step-by-step My future work setting is as a CMH counselor. My target clientele,… My future work setting is as a CMH counselor. My target clientele, the LBGTQ+ community, is also an important factor. This is a crucial factor when taken into consideration the connection that the LGBTQ+ community and suicide. According to a survey conducted by The Trevor Project (2021) it was found that 42% of the LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year alone. This information adds in many cultural considerations. There are many experiences that the LGBTQ community goes through that impact their mental health differently when compared to their straight peers. Due to how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society, the LGBTQ community tend to be at a higher risk of suicide (The Trevor Project, 2021). These are things that will be taken into consideration when I work with my future clients. In regard to cultural consideration questions, I might ask would be: are they currently out to friends and family? Do they currently live in a safe environment with an affirming support group? Are they in a place where they can confidently advocate for themselves? The answer to these will greatly impact how I might response. As a CMH counselor all mentions of suicide should be handled with seriousness. The specific protocol might be different depending on if I had worked with this client prior and the answers to the previous questions. One of the first things I would do would be to assess that they are in no immediate danger and if that is not the case a local mental health crisis team/resources might be brought in to assist in this situation. However, if I believed that they were not in immediate danger we would make sure to talk about the feelings and thoughts present in a session. Making sure to talk privately and not with family around, due to the nature that they might not be comfortable or ‘out’ to said family. It would be smart for in the safe space created that I mention my limits of confidentiality and what that might mean for needed to share the information discuss for the benefit of the client should that need come up. One of the important things I would also do would be to make sure my client had all the resources available. Luckily, there are several amazing resources for the LGBTQ community. Among those are the LGBT National Hotline, Trans Lifeline, The Trevor Project, and True Colors United. True Colors United actually focus on ending homelessness in LGBTQ youth and helps those in need of raising funds to support the community (Cherry, 2021). This is a good resource to keep in mind because if a client doesn’t have a support system or a safe place to live their risk for suicide increases. More so to think about because when this crisis is over, things need to be put into place, so this doesn’t happen again.   What is your response? Identify at least two resources and two challenges in addressing suicide as a counselor.Identify how you might intervene differently than your peers. Provide an empirical rationale for your approach. How might you seek additional training in addressing suicide?
