Question Answered step-by-step Mental disease is most prevalent in young adults (18-25 years… Mental disease is most prevalent in young adults (18-25 years old). For young adults with severe mental illness and a history of adversity, access to professional, culturally appropriate treatment is essential. These concepts, which include religion and spirituality (RS), are becoming increasingly essential in the assessment and treatment of mental illness. Analysis of 55 young people with mental illness who had sought crisis intervention services found that vulnerable young adults in psychiatric crisis communicate about RS and how religion/spirituality arises in their stories about their experiences, comprehension, and treatment of mental illness. Moreover, half of the 55 interviewees characterized RS naturally and four main themes emerged from the interviews: dealing with RS positively, coping with RS negatively, a relationship with God, and the consequences of coping with RS and the mental well-being of these findings. This sample also reported that RS was difficult to deal with, indicating that mental health providers need further training to adequately assess and integrate this aspect of young adults’ lives. – This article outlines the findings, as well as potential directions for future study.
