Question Linda was a Registered Nurse employed as a Clinical Nurse on… Linda was a Registered Nurse employed as a Clinical Nurse on Warraber Island in the Torres Strait. This is her first time working in a Torres Strait Islander community. ‘A new adventure’, Linda boasted to her friends before leaving Melbourne. On Linda’s first day on Warraber Island, she met two colleagues (the only other local health staff). Betty and Jack were both Indigenous health workers. Betty took Linda around the health centre for orientation. There were two treatment rooms, a waiting room and a medication room.Betty was the health centre manager and she held a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Care (Practice). She explained to Linda that, while she was the operational lead, Linda would be the clinical leader. This was a new operational structure for Linda, as her operational leader had always been a Nurse Unit Manager.Betty told her that Jack had completed his Certificate II in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care and was currently enrolled in a Certificate III at the Cairns tafe. She said Jack mostly did the cleaning, driving and follow-up with patients, while the RN and Betty did the ‘hands-on’ practice.Betty said that Linda and Jack would have to go and visit some community members that morning. She said Linda would have to change into a T-shirt before going out, as the spaghetti-strap top Linda was wearing would not be appropriate for the community (Linda considered it appropriate for the weather). As it was Linda’s first day, she chose to follow Betty’s advice and perhaps challenge her at a later date.Betty indicated that Linda should follow Jack to the car. Linda and Jack left the clinic, and Jack began to introduce her to the islanders. Every second house or so, Jack stopped the car to introduce Linda to some of the local people. Linda met the chairman of the island, local Elders and priests. After some time, she became a little nervous about spending so much time away from the clinic on her first day.For each person Linda met, Jack provided an explanation of who they were related to and how. He also briefly made mention of some of their health problems. By lunchtime, Linda was back at the clinic, where Betty was just completing the changing of a client’s dressing. . When Linda goes back to the clinic, she begins planning how she will deliver care to the community. list and explain three adjustments she will need to make taking into account the different cultural factors she has recognised on her first day? e.g. in relation to her dress, body language, communication, format of conversation, nursing care etc.Explain the significance of Jack’s thorough introduction to the community in regards to communication and rapport building Health Science Science Nursing HEALTH HLT54115 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
