Comment on the following statement: “A company should produce and sell any product as long as there is a market for it.”
The author of this post believes that a company should not produce and sell any product as long as there is a market for it. God gives us and companies the freedom to market, produce and advertise any product or service that makes a profit, but Christian business managers must understand that this does not serve the purpose of God. A fantastic scripture that can be applied by business professionals when deciding the service or product to sell in the market follows.Everything is permissible-but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible-but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others (The New International Version, 1978/1983, 1 Corinthians 10:23-24). A business owner who owns and sells cigarettes and alcohol must realize the health problems, addiction or death that can result from these products. While there is a huge market for cigarettes and alcohol, selling these products is seeking the good of profit and not the good of others.
Consumers are ultimately responsible for the decisions they make and the products or services they purchase. No one is forced to buy products or services that are unhealthy, addictive or can cause death. Essentially, consumers will seek to avoid a mode of consumption characterized by falling short of their own internal standardsbehaviors they believe they should exhibitwhen their self-accountability is elevated (Peloza, White, & Jingzhi, 2013, p. 114). While consumers are exclusively responsible for what they purchase, business owners should sell products or services that do not cause others to fall short of the glory of God. Two more scriptures that business owners can put into practice for successful business practices follow. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life (The New International Version, 1978/1983, Galatians 6:7-8). You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love (The New International Version, 1978/1983, Galatians 5:13).
