Question The Hartwell Healthcare Corporation has acquired or merged with approximately15 healthcare organizations over the past 2 years. Each acquisition or merged facility was carefully scrutinized in terms of its overall contribution to a comprehensive approach to health care. The major industry in town is also the major health insurance purchaser. The Hartwell Healthcare Corporation wants to establish an exclusive contract with this industry. In other words, Hartwell would be the only provider of services eligible for payment through the employee health insurance program. The major acute care facility is a teaching hospital. Three community-based hospitals, one specialty hospital (The Women's Center), a long-term care facility with an assisted-living community, four ambulatory care centers, a home healthcare service, and 75 physician offices are incorporated within the Hartwell system. There have been both good and bad responses to the changes in health care in this community. In fact, the community seems fairly disconcerted by the changes. Some people think there isn't enough progress, and others think changes are occurring too quickly. Maggie Jackson is a new nurse manager in the teaching hospital where nursing students also affiliate. Maggie graduated from the local baccalaureate program 4 years ago. The school of nursing has asked the chief nursing officer to provide someone to talk with the graduating seniors so that they can comprehend the current healthcare system in town and understand the projected future.
