For several generations, society struggled to understand substance use by women and how to deal with the problem. Women were subjected to social condemnation if they had an SUD, and often the woman had to hide her SUD to protect herself, or society isolated her from social and family support. The belief was that SUDs were problems that only men had. When women did seek substance use treatment, clinicians struggled with finding effective ways to treat women because they had a "one-size-fits-all" program designed around the treatment for men.This attitude is beginning to change as more and more women are coming forward with a need for help in treating SUDs. It is estimated that 6.5 million women in the United States struggle with an SUD. Despite increasing acceptance of women with SUDs, women are still subjected to more social condemnation than men with SUDs.Research conducted in the past about substance use focused exclusively on male subjects, but the results were generalized toward females with SUDs. However, current research findings show that hormonal, pharmacokinetic, neurochemical, and social factors alter a woman's ability to biotransform substances. Also, these findings show that these factors influence a woman's ability to recover from substance use disorders.
