Ego identity is the idea of gaining an understanding of who you are as an individual. Ego identity is being able to identify your own strength, weakness, passions, relationships, and environments you thrive in (Hadler,b Binder, Stiller, 2017). Paz, Tabatabaee, and Esmaeilinasab (2019), state, an adolescent’s identity can be grouped into one of four categories: diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, and achievement. These categories relate to the correlation between exploration and commitments. Diffusion has low exploration rate and low commitment rate. Foreclosure’s correlation is low exploration but strong commitments. Moratorium has high exploration rates but low commitment rates. Lastly, achievement has a strong correlation of both a high exploration rate with high commitment rates (Paz, Tabatabaee, Esmaeilinasab, 2019). Exploration is more of an ideological domain regarding occupational ideas, religious practices, political beliefs, and philosophical life-style values. Commitments are the interpersonal connections such as friendships, relationships, sexual roles, and extracurricular activities (Paz, Tabatabaee, Esmaeilinasab, 2019). As we progress through different stages in our lives we begin to explore into different ideas, opinions, beliefs, and theories which best fit our mentality. For instance, we begin to take a stance on political views, religious theories, and possibilities of different occupations we may like. These exploration areas connect to our commitment levels. An example, if a person has a strong religious background, they tend to have better commitment with others within the religious group. Also, social norms within an ethnicity play a factor into how well a commitment will be with those outside of it. Paz, Tabatabaee, Esmaeilinasab (2019), state,”Robinson (2007) stresses that the process of identity reconstruction essentially involves a subtle balancing act of deep-rooted ethnic values, cultures, modes of operating etc. with often new and in most cases different norms, cultures and interests of the host country where the migrant’s resettlement takes place.”Understanding the reconstruction of a person’s own viewpoint is key to integrate within the new culture. The etic and emic approach of cross-cultural psychology play a role in the integration. Etic approach is defined as the study of culture through an “outsider” perspective, applying one “universal” set of concepts and measurement of cultures (Cherry, 2022). Emic approach refers to using an “insider” perspective analyzing concepts within the specific context of the observed culture (Cherry, 2022). Ethnocentrism is viewing and/or comparing/evaluating another culture based on your own culture; using the norm from within your own culture to judge with bias upon another group, which makes it difficult for someone to allow a new culture/idea to influence their behaviors (Cherry, 2022).
