Thank youIt is important to pick up the early signs/symptoms of depression. As a nurse, we have to be vigilant in our observation. If we can pick up early signs/symptoms of depression, the person can receive help before the situation getting worse before they have any ideas of self-harm or suicide. There are four major group of symptoms in depression, theses are mood, cognition, physiology, and behaviour. Okay let’s just look at the first group of symptoms which is mood. People with depression will feel sad, most of them have low self-esteem, they may feel themselves worthless and they will have no hope in their future. There is lack of motivation in people with motivation which is always being mistaken by family or friends as lazy or trying to avoid responsibility. This will create a lot of conflict between the person and their family or their friends. The second group of symptoms in depression is cognition, which is always related to thinking, reasoning, judgement, attention, and memory. People with depression will have negative cognition that is pessimistic thoughts, they may feel guilty about what they have done in the past and what they do in the present. They are unable to make judgement and therefore very indecisive even though it is very small decision such as ordering their own meal. Their attention span is short, and they may have poor concentration, this is because they are being occupied by all the negative thoughts. Their memory may be affected as well especially those occur more recently, they may repeatedly ask the same question but every time they ask, they thought it was the first time they ask, this symptom may easily lead to micro active impairment or dementia.People with depression may think they have no hope but when they find a way out, they would be bounced back because they may decide to end their lives that means they may have suicidal thought. The third group of symptoms in depression is physiology the bodily function. The people with depression may have poor appetite/ increase appetite because of this people may loss/gain weight. Generally, people do not have energy to do things so they will have psychomotor retardation, which is slowing down the mental activity than motor, slow thinking than slow speech, slow emotional reaction, and slow physical response. Sleep disturbance like insomnia /excessive sleep. Most of the people with major depression may have health issue such as chronic fatigue, headaches/migraines, stomach pain irritable bowel syndrome etc.Okay lets us look at the last group of symptoms of depression is behaviour. People with depression would like to isolate themselves and they are socially withdrawn, reduce interest in engagement with friends. With poor thinking and poor concentration as well as poor memory the people with depression will have poor performance at work and in the study. They will have reduced interest in hobbies such gym section or volunteering which they enjoy in the past.
