Question Fundamentals of Acting: Scene Observation Reaction: A. Watch these… Fundamentals of Acting: Scene Observation Reaction:A. Watch these short scenes and analyze them. Tell me if the character development is believable and if so, why? If it isn’t believable, why? What techniques or items from these actors’ bag of tricks do you imagine they’re using?B. Rate the performance on a scale of 1-10 (1 being Not Believable At All and 10 being Completely Believable), and explain why you scored the actor/actress the way you did.C. Your impressions can be in paragraph form or bullet points. Be specific, connect your points.D. Below is a sample to illustrate what I’m looking for, and that you could use as a template **(I attached the example down below as an image**) SCENES TO ASSESS AND ANALYZE:1. DOUBT: “Just ‘Til June,” Viola Davis & Meryl Streep. Streep’s character is trying to tell Davis’ character that her son may have been sexually abused by a priest who runs the school her son attends. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThsZ8wfhJpk2. LOVE, ACTUALLY: “Both Sides Now,” Emma Thompson. Thompson’s character believes that a Christmas package contains a beautiful necklace she saw her husband buy (he wasn’t aware she saw). When she opens it, it’s NOT the necklace, and she realizes that the necklace was for someone else and that her husband is having an affair. But because her young children are there and because they’re off to the Christmas Eve pageant, she can’t let on that she knows. Ignore the last 12 seconds of this clip.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y-8vxObugM3. WATCHMEN: “A God Walks into Abar,” Regina King & Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Talk about a fantastical, non-realistic scene! This is an alternative time line. King’s character, Angela Abar, is meeting Dr. Manhattan (superhero with God-like powers who can see events from the past and future at the same time and be at multiple places simultaneously). It is a national celebration day in Viet Nam, commemorating the end of the Viet Nam war which Dr. Manhattan single-handedly won for the United States. People wear “Dr. Manhattan” masks as part of the celebration. He walks into a bar and tells Angela that they will marry, have 3 children and be blissfully happy for 10 years. She thinks this is an elaborate pick-up line and decides to play along. Crazy good stuff!! They both won Golden Globes for these characters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0exuZfIRwgc 4. ANGELS IN AMERICA: “Night Flight to San Francisco,” Mary-Louise Parker. Parker’s character, who is a huge drug addict who is delusional and also hallucinates. This whole play (resulting in this movie) is Theatre of the Absurd: ghosts pop and up and chat with people regularly, hallucinations abound right and left, and two of the characters (including Parker’s) meet while one is on a drug trip and the other is having a drug-induced nightmare. So having a character speak to us from the window of a plane at 30,00 feet is nothing! Again, a great example of a believable character in a nonsensical situation, so try not to get caught up in the words but rather with her demeanor and the emotions her dream/delusion conjures for her.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1067h4MIqA Image transcription text0.
