I appreciate Ramona’s ingenuity and interest in science — at Fizz, I’ve recently started a point-of-sale charitable donation program for girls in STEM. But this has come at the absolute worst time for us. We’ve just launched “Effervesce”, a new line of healthy alternatives — vitamin water, kale chips, etc. Suddenly having our products associated with ill-health and decay in the public consciousness is not optimal. I’ve also personally made some mistakes in reacting to the crisis. During an unrelated interview with the Business Insider podcast, I was broadsided by a question about the scandal. I hadn’t been briefed yet and didn’t realize how big the situation was growing, and responded with a flippant comment about “nobody drinking Fizz Cola for the health benefits”. The clip was played on Last Week Tonight With John Oliver alongside Ramona’s vlog. This obviously only compounds our image problem.I think it’s important to get this right and recenter the dialogue in a positive way. We want to establish that our snack food brands are a fun “sometimes” food… but that most of the time you should reach for our healthier line-up instead.Most importantly, I’d like to make sure we sincerely thank Ramona for being smart, curious, and giving us an opportunity to have a public discussion about an important topic.
