He has no spouse or children. I selected this person because he is a close friend and I have previous knowledge of what he has gone through during his life. He battled prostate cancer in his early 30s and became addicted to opioids. I could tell right away he was not embarrassed or ashamed to talk with me. He discussed the alcohol issues he is dealing with. He never goes a day without a drink. He wakes up and will have a glass of wine or a hard cider beer. He admitted that he is a functioning alcoholic. He was admitted to the hospital twice last year due to extreme fatigue and after the tests were run, they found that his liver is extremely damaged. When I confronted him about stopping if he knows it could kill him, his only response was “It’s better than what I was doing”.
